Moving a project from one organization to another

I would like the ability to move a project from one team in a particular organization to another team in a different organization. Our company has many entities and domains, however they are all the same company. For example - blockllc.com, blockmultifamily.com, etc. I created all the organizations for our company and need to move a project and am unable to do so and have not received any help from the Asana support team.

Hello Chandler,

There is no official solution from Asana, BUT I tried this one and it worked great for me: https://asana.kothar.net/

It was also un-officially recommended to me by one Asana Customer Success Manager.

My recommendation before using it:
Copy your project
Test first with a dummy/Example project

Best,
Sebastian

This tool seems to work great for copying projects/tasks between workspaces, but doesn’t seem to support moving projects/tasks between organizations. Is there any other way to do this outside of manually remaking all the tasks in the new organization?

Hi,
You can simply delete the old project after copying it with the tool to the new organization.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for pointing to the url https://asana.kothar.net/

I was facing the same problem : need to move all projects from one team from one organization to the organization. By default, the tool only shows you the organizations that are attached to your Asana account. So if you have only one organization attached to your account, then you will only be able to move projects from a worspace to another within the same organization.

So what I did was to actually link/merge my second organization (the empty one that I want to populate with content from the first one). So in the top right corner, I can go from one organization to another. Once this was done, I was then able to use https://asana.kothar.net/ to show me all the organizations and copy projects from source org to destination org.

Just create the destination team manually. You will not be able to copy it from the source org.

Then you can copy projects from org1>team A to org2>team A.

The copy process takes a while because of API limitations so be patient (it took me 90mn).

Hope this helps.

@Sokha_HIN Please take a look at Sendana Tools-Sendana Add- A Novel Way to Add and/or Transfer Projects and Tasks In Mass - #9 by James_Carl another alternative that has many cross organizational, propject to project, task to project copying capabilities.

Amazing! That actually worked! But If there are any members in organisation 1 and not in organisation 2 where you would like to copy to, there will be an error, so you have to first make the same team in organisation 2.

Also, In my case, when I registered another organisation that one become visiable on first one and not the other way around, but doesnt matter as Ditto is really flexible with that. Thank you!

EDIT: Now I see all my list projects become board projects! I dont know one can do anything about that, but I wanted to be like that anyway, so Ditto did the work for me :)…still, keep this in mind

Actually Asana now lets you view any project as either a list or a board; and it also lets you define which is the default for a particular project when you go to view it. So it’s not that your list projects became board projects, but that the default view for them got set as “board”.

While it sounds like that works fine for you, for anyone reading this, in case that’s not good for them, it’s easy to set the default view back to “list” (or to “calendar” or “timeline” for that matter); here is the way to do that:
